Short answer
Plumbing work comes from three places on Google: the map pack, the ordinary results below it, and paid ads. For emergency jobs the map pack does most of the work, so finish your Google Business Profile first. It is free, and it is usually the fastest win available.
If you have ever wondered why the same three plumbers keep appearing when you search your own trade in your own town, this is the post that explains it. No jargon, and nothing you need to be technical to follow.
Where does plumbing work actually come from on Google?
Open Google on a phone and search plumber near me. You will see three things, in this order:
- Paid ads at the very top, marked as sponsored
- The map pack, a map with exactly three businesses listed under it
- The ordinary results, the blue links that go on down the page
Those are three different systems with three different sets of rules. This is the bit that trips most plumbers up, because an agency can truthfully say they are working on your Google presence while only touching one of them.
Which one matters most for a plumber?
For emergency work, the map pack, and it is not close.
Somebody with water coming through a ceiling does not read. They glance at the three businesses on the map, look at the star rating, and press call. The website barely gets opened. That whole decision is made from information you control through your Google Business Profile.
For planned work it flips. Somebody pricing up a bathroom renovation will open three or four sites, compare them, and take their time. There the website does the deciding.
Most plumbing businesses want both, but they are different jobs.
What should I fix first?
In this order, because this is the order things pay back:
- Your Google Business Profile. Free, fast, and the basis of the map pack. Categories, service areas, real photos, hours that match how you actually work.
- Reviews. Volume and recency both feed the map. A plumber with ninety reviews and three from last week generally beats one with two hundred that stopped in 2023.
- Tracking. Put it in before you spend money, not after, or you will never know which of this worked.
- Your website. Pages for the services that actually make you money, and for the suburbs you want more work in.
- Ads, if you need the phone going before the rest has had time to build.
Why do plumbers get sold the wrong thing?
Because the fastest work to sell is not the work that pays back best.
Local SEO is slow and unglamorous. In month one it looks like nothing is happening, because for the most part nothing visible is. That is a difficult thing to invoice for, so it is common to be sold ads instead and told it is the same thing. Ads are a perfectly good tool, but they stop the moment you stop paying, and the profile work you never did is still not done.
The honest version is that most plumbers should do the free things properly first, then pay for the rest in the order above.
What does good look like?
You should be able to answer this question: how many phone calls did your marketing produce last month, and what did each one cost?
If nobody can tell you that, it does not matter how good the report looks. Everything on this site is built around being able to answer it, which is why tracking goes in during week one rather than month three.
